Tips on getting the most out of your tank PDF Print E-mail

With rising fuel prices, below are tips og getting the most out of your tank whether it be commuting to work for for pleasure.

  1. Service your vehicle regularly (air filters, fuel filters, spark plugs, oil change, brakes, wheels, steering, battery).
  2. Check tyre pressure regularly – flat tyres use fuel.
  3. Don’t drive – sounds obvious but try walking, cycling or hopping on a bus.
  4. Before you start a journey – Is it essential?
  5. Can I combine this jorney with others in the same direction?
  6. Work from home if possible. Plan your route.
  7. If you can, avoid main centre rush hours and road works.
  8. Listen to radio for updates on travel. Remove unnecessary items from the boot of the car.
  9. Car share with colleagues where possible.
  10. Don’t brake excessively – keep at a steady speed by looking well ahead and assessing the road early.
  11. If you know you are going to be stopping for a long period of time – turn the engine off – don’t leave the car idling.
  12. Accelerate slowly when starting from dead stop.
  13. Drive smoothly and consistently using higher gears.
  14. Use your air conditioning and other on board electrical devices (for example, mobile phone chargers) sparingly.
  15. Don’t speed.
  16. Park your car forward facing as reversing using more fuel.
  17. Make sure your petrol cap fits tightly and buy a new one if your current cap does not fit snugly. Petrol can easily evaporate if the cap not airtight.
  18. If buying a new car, buy a more fuel efficient smaller car – consider diesel.
  19. You can even save on road tax by having a more fuel efficient car.
  20. Consider gas powered cars as alternative to petrol or diesel.
